Its the month of the sin of the golden calf , which resulted in Moses breaking the ten commandments .
The name of the month was adapted from the Zodiac sign aptly named Tamuz “hebrew” in English “cancer”.

Its the only month not mentioned in the bible.
The month is also known as Menachem Av Hebrew ( comforter of fathers).

In Jewish history, Elul is a time of repentance in preparation of the Hihg Holy Days Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

The name is derived from the Hebrew root K~S.L as in the words “kessel”, “kislah” (hope, positiveness) or “kissil”(orion) a constellation that shines especially in this month,, because of the expectation and hope of rain.
